Abstract

We describe an elderly woman with a hyperphosphatemic hypocalcemic coma, hypernatremia, hypokalemia, metabolic acidosis, convulsions and respiratory and renal failure, following the administration of hypertonic sodium phosphate enemas. Physicians and pharmacists should be aware of the possible adverse effects that can be caused by these enemas.
