Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine R. Ismaël ben Eleazar's aphorism in the Babylonian Talmud Sabbath 32a relating to the designation of the Holy Ark of the synagogue in the phraseology ameiha-aretz. The term amah relating to the Holy Ark appears on an inscription found in Naveb in the Golan and in Dura-Europos in Syria. Through the study of literary, epigraphic and archeological sources, we postulate that R. Ismaël ben Eleazar's words were aimed at JewishChristians who lived in these two locations. Thus, the vague expression am-ha-aretz can perhaps be construed more precisely than previously thought.
