Les auteurs s'interrogent si le terme de Shoah pourrait être appliqué aux juifs d'Afrique du Nord, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Une partie de l'Afrique du Nord a été occupée et les Juifs ont subi des persécutions, mais leur extermination n'a pas été systématique.

On est généralement surpris d’entendre parler de Shoah au sujet des Juifs d’Afrique du Nord, les nazis n’ayant occupé qu’une partie de cette région, le reste étant aux mains des Alliés. Pour les Juifs du Maroc ou d’Algérie, la guerre fut effectivement courte, et l’extermination non systématique. Ils ont cependant eux aussi connu des persécutions.
Aucun travail présentant l’ensemble de la question n’ayant été publié, et désireux de mieux faire connaître l’histoire des Juifs en Afrique du Nord pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Dan Michman et Haïm Saadoun ont réuni les meilleurs spécialistes, à l’échelle internationale. Cet ouvrage étudie donc l’idéologie nazie en Afrique du Nord et l’étendue de l’antisémitisme avant et pendant la guerre, et analyse le comportement des populations locales pour répondre à cette question centrale : y a-t-il eu une « Shoah » des Juifs d’Afrique du Nord ?

It is generally surprising to hear the term “Shoah” used in reference to North African Jews, as the Nazis only occupied part of the region, the rest being held by the Allies. For the Jews of Morocco and Algeria, the war was indeed short, and the extermination was not systematic. However, they too experienced persecution. Since no comprehensive work on this subject had been published, and wishing to shed light on the history of Jews in North Africa during the Second World War, Dan Michman and Haim Saadoun brought together leading international experts. This book examines Nazi ideology in North Africa and the extent of antisemitism before and during the war, and analyzes the behavior of local populations to answer this central question: Was there a “Shoah” of North African Jews?

Israeli historian Dan Michman, professor at the Faculty of Jewish Studies at Bar-Ilan University (Israel), and research associate at Yad Vashem, is the author of numerous acclaimed works, including *On the Memory of the Shoah in the Jewish World* and *The Emergence of Jewish Ghettos during the Holocaust*.
