Langmuir films of normal-alkanes on the surface of liquid mercury

The role of the molecule's interaction with the subphase in the determination of the Langmuir film's structure was studied by examining the structure of Langmuir films of organic molecules on mercury. Surface tensiometry was used to measure surface pressure-molecular area isotherms, and synchrotron-based surface scattering x-ray methods were employed to determine the structure at various points along the isotherm. The resultant data were analyzed in detail.
