Abstract

A kyrios was anyone who had responsible power (kyros) over something. Aperson might be kyrios (“entitled”) to do an action (Aesch. Ag. 104), kyrios to deal with (Soph. Aj. 734), or decide (Xen. Hell. 2.2.18) a matter, kyrios of a household (Aesch. Cho. 658) or of astate (Arist. Pol. 1281a11). Avalid decision was kyrios (Dem. 24.1), an invalid one akyros (Andoc.1.8).
