Kinetics and mechanisms of intermetallic growth by bulk and surface interdiffusion

Abstract

The kinetics of intermetallic growth by bulk and surface interdiffusion in the binary systems Cd-Ni and Cu-Zn were studied in the temperature ranges 200-280°C and 160-270°C respectively. Arrhenius equations for kinetic coefficients of interracial reaction β, interdiffusion coefficients D̃ and for the product Dsδ (Ds is the surface diffusion coefficient, δ is the thickness of subsurface layer) for diffusion along the intermetallic surface have been obtained. Mechanisms of bulk and surface diffusion in growing intermetallics have been proposed and discussed.
