Abstract

Taiwan's first ever International Workshop on Humanitarian Diplomacy and Jewish Studies in East Asia. The courage and altruism of diplomats, namely Ho Fengshan of the Republic of China and Chiune Sugihara of Japan, who saved thousands of European Jews during the Holocaust, were the main focus of the workshop which was organized and co-chaired by Prof. Ber Kotlerman of Bar Ilan University, Israel, and the newly appointed Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Nauru Dr. Fabrizio Bozzato at Tamkang University in Tamsui. Along with Mrs. Ho and Mr. Nobuki Sugihara, son of the Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who offered new insights on their fathers' humanitarian activities, the workshop's participants from Taiwan, Chinese Mainland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Poland, Germany, Belgium, and USA discussed other issues of humanitarian diplomacy, as well as Jewish presence and history in East Asia.
