Abstract

The question of Islam’s relationship with socialism and communism was the subject of considerable attention in both Western and Middle Eastern research throughout the 1950s and 1960s. There were two main reasons for this broad scholarly engagement. The first was the Soviet Union’s successful penetration of key Arab countries in the 1950s.
