Abstract


Student councils may affect the schools in which they function in various meaningful ways, and also impact the education system. The aim of this study was to examine the level of involvement of student councils in secular state schools compared to religious state schools, and in schools located in Israel's geographic center compared to schools located in its geographic periphery. The study focused on the student councils' fields of endeavor and types of activity. The sample consisted of 600 students from secular and religious state schools, both in Israel's geographic center and periphery. The findings show that the involvement of student councils in religious state schools in the center of the country is higher compared to secular state schools in the same geographical area. The study provides another aspect to existing findings concerning the two state school systems. Furthermore, the aspect of student council involvement also gives expression to differences found between schools in Israel's geographic center and periphery
