Abstract

This special issue highlights the great deal of progress that has been made recently in understanding the role of morphological awareness in spelling in several orthographies. The articles in this issue demonstrate that when it comes to spelling performance, we need to think beyond the narrow confines of a monolithic metalinguistic awareness. We hope that these studies will encourage researchers to better capture the complexities of spelling experiences. Gaining more insights into the idiosyncratic mechanism in which readers process morphological input has important implications for more meaningful morphological instruction.
