Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the intersections and overlaps between mental health, sexual health, emotion-regulation (ER), and well-being among individuals who identify as sexual minorities and heterosexual in Israel. Sexual minority individuals face unique stressors, such as discrimination and internalized stigma, which may influence these health domains. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Israel between September 2022 and April 2023, with 465 participants. Network analysis was employed to explore the relationships between mental health (anxiety, depression, psychopathologies), sexual health (compulsive sexual behavior disorder, sexual functioning), ER, and well-being. Results: Sexual minority individuals reported higher psychopathology, anxiety, depression, suicide ideation, substance use disorder, sex-related distress, problematic pornography use, and compulsive sexual behavior disorder levels and lower ER and well-being levels. Network analysis revealed the centrality of the number of diagnosed psychopathologies and depression among sexual minority individuals, whereas sexual functioning played a central role among heterosexual individuals. Conclusions: The study highlights the heightened mental health challenges faced by sexual minority individuals, which are linked to ER difficulties and sexual health issues. Policy Implications: The results underscore the importance of inclusive mental health and sexual health policies that specifically cater to sexual minority individuals. Policies should promote comprehensive sexual health education, accessible mental health care, and anti-discrimination laws to mitigate the effects of minority stress on health outcomes. Tailored interventions could bridge the gaps in mental health services for sexual minority populations, fostering emotional resilience and improving overall well-being.
