Abstract

The influence of spectral diffusion on the distribution of the number of photons emitted by a single molecule was investigated. A generating function method was used to obtain an exact analytical formula for Mandel's Q parameter. Transitions between quantum sub-Poissonian and classical super-Poissonian behaviors, and fast to slow modulation limits were observed for both weak and strong excitation fields. The super-Poissonian behavior of Q was expected if the spectral diffusion process was slow enough.
