Abstract

The short-range-forces of adhesion and the long-range forces of repulsion between glass surfaces in aqueous solutions of cationic cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) have been measured, as well as the free energies of wetting of the surfaces by the solutions. The long-range repulsion displays behavor typical of ionic-electrostatic forces. The specific free energy of adhesion F/2 at the first potential minimum rises with increasing CPB concentration by orders of magnitude as a result of hydrophobic interactions; in pure water the surfaces repel each over the entire range of distance, and the minimum (adhesion) is absent.
