Abstract
The Hall–Héroult process, which is the basis of primary aluminium productionAluminium production, relies on a constant electric current to maintain bath temperatures around 950–960 ℃. This heat is essential for efficient alumina dissolutionAlumina dissolution and stable metal production. Even brief power interruptionsPower interruption can disturb the thermal balanceThermal balance of electrolytic pots, while prolonged outages can cause severe issues such as bath freezing, side ledge thickening, muck formation, and cathode cooling. The operational stability of potlines, particularly low-amperage lines (~70 kA), is therefore strongly sensitive to the frequency, intensity, and duration of power disturbances. This study presents multiple instances of power interruptionsPower interruption at Renukoot potline (2,138 pots) in Jan’24 to Jul’25, assessing their effects on pot thermal stabilityThermal stability through real-time measurementsMeasurements. The results indicate that sustaining optimal bath chemistryBath chemistry and anodeAnode–cathode distance (ACD), along with swift normalization protocols, significantly diminishes the occurrence of abnormal pots during periods of high disturbance. These findings highlight the essential requirement for aluminium smeltersAluminium smelter to implement comprehensive outage preparedness strategies that incorporate real-time monitoring. Ensuring stable power continuity is not only operationally beneficial but also a crucial prerequisite for preserving the thermal and chemical stability of aluminium electrolysisAluminium electrolysisreduction cellsReduction cell.
