How can criminology (and victimology) become positive?

Criminology and victimology are fields of study and practice that represent negative aspects of individual and social provinces, that of inter- and intra-personal harm, injury and violation and our responses to these negative aspects. Positive criminology represents the attempt to bring positive values into this negative scene. This emerging field was defined out of my accumulated experience during over 20 years of research and practice, and due to my exposure to related influential works of colleagues. Since the term ‘positive’ is value laden, this chapter describes several possible negative-positive vectors, and indicates the contribution of positive criminology to each of them. In conclusion, the chapter portrays limitations of positive criminology and suggests a future direction of development of the science of the positive.
