Abstract

The study of the relation between mortality and development has often been limited to the analysis of the effect of income per capita on some measure of the level of mortality such as the age standardized death rate. This paper takes a different look at the problem not only because it considers a whole series of socio-economic variables which are related to development but also because it studies the effect of development on the different causes of death. A principal component analysis based on international data for the year 1964. is presented and allows one to propose a typology of causes of death.
