Abstract
Perhaps one of the most remarkable features of the Socratic philosophers’ political thought is the search for a group that, in charge of ruling, guarantee the stability of a society. the Platonic guardians are without doubt the paradigmatic reference of this topic, but not the only one. The Respublica Lacedaemoniorum and Cyropaedia have their own Xenophontean guardians: μοιοι and μότιμοι. In this paper I aim to analyze these groups, proposing a comparative reading that accounts for its relevance to Xenophon’s political philosophy.
