Functionality, Memory and Cultural Anchor: Back to the Haketia Language

In this artical Nina Pinto-Abecasis will illustrate the comeback of Hakatia and its uses in the continuing and ever-expending circles of discourse as an anchor of identity among the Northern Moroccan Jew. She will examine the language as it is reflected in virtual arenas, social networking and in social events that are based on the cities of origin of different communities or on the Haketia language itself - a phenomenon that was rarer in the past. This research is based on field work and documentation that Nina Pinto-Abecasis has done among the Jews of Tatuan, the capital of northern Marocco, who immigrated to Israel and other countries.
