    Abstract

As a contribution to the 125th anniversary celebrations of the IEEE (originally the IRE), this paper reviews the technical evolution of one episode in the development of systems manufactured on printed circuit boards to systems realized on an IC (Integrated Circuit) chip. This particular episode, spanning several decades, covers the replacement of the inductors, capacitors, and resistors making up discrete LC filters, by inductorless active RC filters that can be integrated on an IC chip. The latter are called active because feedback amplifiers are required to replace the charge storage and resonance properties of the LC circuits making up classical frequency-selective filters.
