Abstract
Sufficiently powerful second harmonic signals for direct detection and locking to the rubidium transition using a single 1556 nm source are developed owing to the recent progress in optical amplifiers. The light source was a 1556 nm external cavity diode laser that was amplified by an erbium-doped fiber amplifier with a saturation power of 40 mW. The waveguide confinement and the high nonlinear coefficient of periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguide doubler enabled to achieve high conversion efficiency.
