Abstract
Since the implementation of the CEFRL and the creation of the now popular DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française), one realizes that the standard of knowledge and skills is expected by the educational authorities for the basic levels is lower and more superficial than before. According to the new learning methods focusing on the aims of the CEFRL, French must be, above all, an everyday communicative tool and it often doesn’t matter how one understands or makes oneself understood as long as one understands and is understood. This is a non-standard and substandard type of discourse that could be defined as “à peu près”. This situation becomes especially problematic in countries where French is less widespread than in Western Europe and even more when it comes to learning French in an academic environment. In these countries, the result of these reforms seems to be having a negative impact on the linguistic performance of French learners and the new state of affairs requires consideration and a revision of both the objectives and the teaching methods
