Abstract
As multi-agent systems become more complex, heterogeneous and operating in open environments, the need for locating agents with specific capabilities becomes more important. In open systems, agents and communication links can dynamically and unpredictably appear and disappear. Hence agents do not know at all times exactly the names and locations of all agents that constitute the agent society. Locating agents is important for purposes of communication, coordination and task delegation. In previous work, we have identified various categories of middle agents, i.e. agents whose role is to help agents locate one another based on specified characteristics. Matchmakers are a particular type of middle agents. In this paper we provide a formal semantics for various operations needed for matchmaking.
