Abstract

The results are presented in this study from the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) formation experiment carried out in winter 1995. The three objectives of the experiment were: to define the process of LIW formation through the successive phases of preconditioning, convection and formation, and spreading and dispersion; to study the internal (deep) and external thermohaline cells of the eastern Mediterranean; to conduct a mesoscale experiment in the Levantine Basin.
