Abstract

The excited electronic states of (-)-(S,S)-2,3-dimethyloxirane (DMO) and (-)-(S)-2-methyloxirane (MO) are discussed in light of the vacuum UV optical absorption and circular dichroism spectra and ab initio self-consistent field calculated excitation energies, oscillator strengths, and rotational strengths. The first three observed bands in MO and DMO are assigned as n(O) > Rydberg transitions. The possible location of a valence σ → σ* transition in the region of the second and third bands in DMO is also examined.
