Abstract

The interplay of Anderson localization and laser action in active random media is discussed. The system is a two-dimensional medium made of circular scatterers imbedded in an active matrix. As such, a numerical model which solves simultaneously the Maxwell's equations and the rate equations of a four-level atomic system is used. Depending on the pumping rate, laser action occurs at one or several frequencies, which are found to be identical to the eigenfrequencies of the passive system.
