Abstract
Death with dignity, the right to die, and other ethical and medicolegal issues in the care of dying patients are discussed and related to the following case presentation: A 97-year-old healthy, mentally competent male patient asked to talk with his family physician, saying he felt he was going to die. Thereafter he withdrew from his family and within 2 days was found in bed in a deep coma. The man's condition was closely monitored by his physician, and the family requested that there be no further intervention. Three days later the man died. This case raises some other general questions concerning the role of the physician and the family in the care of the dying patient.
