Abstract
The EPR spectra of Ru**3** plus and Rh**2** plus were studied in single crystals of CaO. For Ru**3** plus (4d**5) an isotropic spectrum is observed, characteristic of a **2T//2//g(t//2//g)**5 ground state. The Rh**2** plus (4d**7) exhibits a static Jahn-Teller effect at 4. 2 degree K, characteristic of a strong field **2E//g (t//2//g)**6(e//g) ground state. The resonance results are reported and compared with those obtained previously for the same ions in the isomorphous MgO host.
