Abstract
A simplified treatment of the EPR spin Hamiltonian for the case of a strong nuclear quadrupole interaction is presented. The spin Hamiltonian is solved by solving the nuclear spin Hamiltonian to second order in the hyperfine interaction perturbation to the quadrupole interaction. The results are compared with those obtained by exact diagonalization and applied to the experimental case of Ir2+ in MgO.
