Abstract

In this paper we show that nanoencapsulated oxygen deficient aluminum doped zinc oxide (ZAO) coatings can significantly reduce the electron beam degradation of sulfide-based phosphors. The nanoencapsulated coatings on particles were synthesized using a modified pulsed laser ablation deposition technique. Microstructural studies indicate that an oxygen deficient ZAO film acts as both a diffusion barrier and an oxygen getter during the electron beam irradiation process. Under optimized deposition conditions, the degradation lifetime of nanoencapsulated zinc sulfide phosphors increased by more than an order of magnitude, compared to noncoated material.
