Abstract
We pose the problem of estimating the width of the upper layer of a two-stratum medium using data from reflectance measurements made at the interface separating the medium from its surroundings. The lower stratum is assumed to be infinite. In this analysis both the scattering and the absorption coefficients are allowed to differ, but are assumed to be known. We also suggest a simple way to include effects of noise into the analysis.
