Abstract

Earthquakes can cause structural damage and pose risks to buildings and occupants’ life. To mitigate these risks, the sustainable infrastructure base isolation technique is proposed. Base isolation (BI) techniques represent innovative approach to safeguard multi-story reinforced concrete (RC) structures from seismic loadings, addressing potential weak structural behavior under such conditions. This study analyzed the seismic behavior of both a fixed base and isolated base RC building in zone V of India, considering near-field (NF) and far-field (FF) seismic excitation from same event with different stations and isolator properties. The present analysis employed lead rubber bearings (LRBs) and high damping rubber bearings (HDRBs), isolator device to mitigate the effects of input earthquakes SAP2000 software was used for the analysis, with ground motions matched to IS 1893 Part 1 (2016) using SeismoMatch software. The analysis aimed to evaluate the building’s responses under matched ground motion inputs, including seismic events specific to zone V. The results of the analysis provided valuable insights into the usefulness of the BI system in diminishing the building responses to seismic forces, demonstrating its potential to augment the seismic flexibility of structures in earthquake-prone regions. The base shear is reduced by 33.42% for near-field records and 33.48% for far-field records. Similarly, the acceleration responses at the top story are reduced by up to 51.20% for near-field records and 55.35% for far-field records.
