Abstract

The validity of the linear elastic fracture mechanics approach to dynamic fracture was investigated. A two-dimensional (2D) square lattice with unit spacing between the mass points was used. The results suggested that reflection from the free edge of the sample was sufficient to render inaccurate the Eshelby calculation of the stress-intensity factor.
