Abstract

Dichlorocarbene, generated from chloroform, aqueous sodium hydroxide and catalytic amount of triethylbenzylammonium chloride, reacts readily with steroids (5α‐stigmastan‐3β‐ol, 5α‐lanost‐8(9)‐en‐3β‐ol‐17‐one and estrone) leading to the corresponding chlorides in fair yields.
