Abstract

The term “diaspora” is applied to a broad range of migrant populations whose current or historic uprooting was politically or economically motivated: political refugees, labor migrants, expatriates, stable ethnic minorities, and other dispersed groups. The entry highlights the commonalities and differences between different kinds of diasporas and points to their multiple intersections with transnational lifestyles and activities. It reviews current trends in research on diasporic communities, including the role of information and communication technologies, political mobilizations, and professional mobility.
