Abstract

A dome mounted composite structure Radome was design and substantiated for an early warning surveillance aircraft. Because of its exceptional size, new facilities were built, including a clean room, autoclave and a dedicated NDI system. The substantiation process followed the "building block" approach and included development of composite material design allowables, coupons and elements testing of critical design details and a full scale static test to the maximum ultimate design loads as the final proof of structure.
