The authors regret the following errors in the original manuscript. The correct labels for the dash-dot lines in Fig. 4(a) should be "ln + 5 Å" and "2ln + 5 Å", and their description in the caption should read 'The dash-dot lines in (a) are the calculated extended alkane lengths, ln, and 2ln, with 5 Å headgroup size added." The two equations for the overlap in the third paragraph of subsection 4.1 should be corrected to "pn = 2l_n (d_I 5)" and "pn = 2l _n (d_I5)", respectively. The discussion and conclusions in the article are not affected by these corrections. The Royal Society of Chemistry apologises for these errors and any consequent inconvenience to authors and readers.
