Abstract

Generally, Moses Mendelssohn is considered as the promoter of the jewish modernity. This evidence is submitted in this paper to investigation. This inquiry will discover a pre-modernity - "the first Aufklärung "-that we find premiss and trend into the Theologico-political treatise of B. Spinoza, the works of Menashe ben Israël (1604-1653) and of Simone Simh'a Luzatto (1583-1663). Mendelssohn was inspired by those thinkers, even ifthey are not named expressly, as it appears through the close reading of his Jerusalem or religious power and Judaïsm.
