Abstract

The localisation properties of one-dimensional stacks composed of alternating layers of normal and metamaterials have been studied both numerically and analytically. It is shown that the localisation length in mixed stacks in the long wavelength limit is much longer than that in homogeneous samples containing layers of only one type. The absence of transmission resonances in mixed stacks for long wavelengths is also established. We attrib-ute these results to the inability of waves to accumulate phase in the mixed structures.
