Abstract

This paper describes the development and implementation of a systems engineering approach to the design of engineering systems. The design methodology encourages participation by a wide circle of experts and allows designers to make high-quality decisions during critical stages of project design and development. Special emphasis is given to the role of communication between experts and designers in an effort to make the design process both effective and economic. Advanced procedures for design synthesis and testing are also introduced. As an example, this methodology is applied to the design of a power distribution system (PDS). Finally, it is shown that engineering education, training, and professional development are indivisible parts of an engineering system itself, and they should be examined together.
