Abstract

Bilobed Zenker’s diverticulum is rare, with only 6 reported cases. Our patient was a 55-year-old male with bilobed Zenker’s diverticulum, surgically managed with open diverticulectomy with cricopharyngotomy. A thyroid mass found intraoperatively was removed via lobectomy. To our knowledge this is the first case of bilobed Zenker’s diverticulum with simultaneous thyroid mass. Ours is also the first to present successful treatment of this disorder with open diverticulectomy with cricopharyngotomy. A thyroid mass may be masked by a diverticulum, as in our case. It is necessary to weigh risks and benefits when deciding how to surgically treat bilobed Zenker’s diverticulum.
