Abstract

This paper presents an edition of an administrative text mentioning an anon-ymous ‘Ionian’/‘Greek’ and is followed by a study of contacts between‘Greeks’ and Babylonians in the Neo-Babylonian empire, in order to betterunderstand the context of the text. As this term was used to designate individ-uals from Asia Minor and the Aegean world, the paper will address peoplebearing the ethnic designation or gentilic Yamanāya as ‘Greeks’ (Zadok 1985:186–187; Rollinger and Henkelman 2009: 33). It is a great pleasure to presentthis study to Ran Zadok, whose works shaped the study of foreign groups inBabylonia
