Abstract
"Ber Kotlerman is a prose writer, poet, and Professor at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, where he currently directs the Rena Costa Center for Yiddish Studies and holds the Sznajderman Chair in Yiddish Culture and Hasidism. As a prominent member of the new generation of authors reviving Yiddish, Kotlerman brings a unique perspective rooted in his childhood in Birobidzhan, Russia's Far East, where his family settled after the Holocaust. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he served as director of the Association of Yiddish Writers and Journalists in Israel and represented the New York Yiddish Forverts (Forward) in Israel. Since 1999, Kotlerman has contributed to Yiddish periodicals across the USA, Israel, Poland, Holland, and France. Alongside publishing over a dozen academic monographs and collections in English and Hebrew, he has released four Yiddish prose books in Israel, the USA, Argentina, and Sweden, with translations of his stories available in English, Russian, French, Dutch, Spanish, German, and Swedish. In 2018 and again in 2024, he received the Rosenfeld Award for Yiddish Literature from Montreal's J. I. Segal Committee of the Jewish Public Library. In 2023, a song he wrote won the Best Original Jewish Song Award at Kleztival, São Paulo's International Jewish Music Festival. This book marks Kotlerman's first collection of poetry." -- מן הכריכה האחורית.
