כתובת ואיור החרותים במערת קבר בבית שערים מעוררים חידה היסטורית מרתקת: האם הנקבר במקום היה גלדיאטור או חייל בלגיון הרומי? אין ודאות שנדע את התשובה לשאלה זו, אולם כך או כך הכתובת והאיור מלמדים כי העולם היהודי תחת שלטון רומי לאחר החורבן היה מגוון הרבה יותר מהדימוי המקובל. (מתוך המאמר)
