Abstract

In Pilates workout, trainers use both a professional lexicon and an idiosyncratic one.
by evoking an image or designating a name that will lead trainees to immediate understanding of the instructions. This lexicon results from the experience acquired through the work with the individual or the group, and is based on trust between trainer and trainees. If in both cases, the naming practice reflects an attempt to create a common denominator that will ensure effective performance, in the idiosyncratic lexicon, the name is often adapted to the group, its cultural background and sensitivities. Based on theoretical frameworks from the field of cognitive semantics and onomastics, the present study examines, mainly through participant observations,
the way in which language promotes the practical goals set by the training. We will focus on the various naming methods, involving processes of translation and explicitation, interpretation and adaptation.
