קינת נשים בטקסי מוות: ניהול רגשות, כנות ומשחק

קינת נשים בתרבויות שונות בעולם היא שירת אבל, בבחינת ביצוע טקסי של בכי, והיא מיועדת ליצור "קהילת רגש". אף שמחקרים התמקדו בתכונותיהם המורכבות של ביצועי קינה באירועי מוות, מעט תשומת לב הוקדשה לשאלת הכנות הרגשית של המבצעות ושל הקהל. מאמר זה עוסק בתרבות הקינה היהודית-תימנית ומתמודד עם שאלה זו באמצעות יישום הגישה של הוכשילד לניהול רגשות (Hochschild, 1979, 1983, 1990) ושל תאוריות ביצוע. ממצאי מחקר זה שנאספו בשיטות של תצפית משתתפת וראיונות עומק בקהילות יהודים-תימנים בישראל חושפים את תפיסת ביצוע הקינה כמומחיות רגשית, ומזהים בביצוע חמישה שלבים עוקבים. ניתוח אסטרטגיות הביצוע מציג את קינת הנשים כזירה לניהול רגשי. השוואת תגובות המרואיינים בשני מעגלי קהל סביב המקוננות שופכת אור על חשיבות הכנות כערך חברתי ועל אידאל האותנטיות, ומציעה הסבר לדעיכת תרבויות קינה בישראל ובעולם בשנים האחרונות שלפני כתיבת מאמר זה. Although research has focused on the complex characteristics of wailing performance in death events, it pays scant attention to questions of performer and audience sincerity. This article tackles these questions by applying Hochschild's theoretical approach (1979, 1983, 1990) to emotion management and performance theories to the case study of Yemenite-Jewish wailing culture. My findings, gathered by observation and in-depth interviews of Yemenite-Jews in Israel, show that the wailing is an emotional expertise involving five successive phases: preparation, "warm-up," unique situation, "cooling off," and aftermath. Phases are mainly distinguished by complex surface-acting strategies that the wailer uses to manage audience emotions. By analyzing differences in the emotional states of participants in the performance, the article sheds light on sincerity as a social value and the ideal of authenticity, and tries to explain the decline of wailing culture in recent years.
