Abstract

This theoretical paper examines communicative spaces (cyber-spaces) in social networks and specifically TikTok. By bringing together theoretical insights from medium theory and from the study of online/offline communicative spaces – spaces and places produced in and through communication practices and technologies – the paper theorizes and conceptualizes (re)mediated places and spaces, and the experience of embodied social co-presence. A contribution is offered to the ongoing (though interruptedly) theoretical debate regrading the intrinsic relationship between media and place. The main argument is that due to the performative and spatial quality of video trends on TikTok, energized by the mimetic and viral character of these short videos, as well as of the platform itself, TikTok offers its users unique and powerful social spaces of shared embodied movement. The argument is demonstrated by a semiotic-communicative examination of short and popular Israeli TikTok trend (#pohlopohlopohpoh). The trend is approached as a techno-discursive hybrid that embodies human/user and platform agencies: affordances, design, algorithmic preferences, and more. By utilizing multimodal discourse analytic sensitivities the spatial phenomenology of embodied movement is revealed. The analysis sheds light on the performative nature of mediated spaces; on the relations between communicative availability and authenticity within the context of media saturation; on the semiotic resources available to users (and scholars) in describing co-existance in cyberspaces; and on the interlinkages between offline and online spaces.מילות מפתח: ניתוח רב־אפנויות, טיקטוק, מרחב תקשורתי (communicative
