Abstract

This paper deals with two temporal constructions in Hebrew, namely the be- and beodo constructions, which, in the past, have been claimed to be semantically identical. The paper examines several distributional and semantic differences between the two constructions, and claims that whereas the be- particle expresses temporal overlap only, beodo has more complex semantics. The main claim is that beodo is a complex particle composed of the temporal be- and odo, which is an inflected form of the Hebrew adayin (still). The various constraints on the beodo construction are derived from the semantics of be- and a modified version of the traditional semantics of still.
