Abstract
The book presents a research paper, the purpose of which is to document the traditional medicinal substances, which are sold to this day in the markets of the Land of Israel. These are products that come from nature: plants, animals and minerals. These materials were once widely used in all ancient cultures, and they include types of resin, incense and spices, which were of high economic value. As part of the research, shops of medicine sellers of different religions and denominations were surveyed, hundreds of substances were collected and even scientifically identified. About two hundred and fifty of these markers are presented in the book accompanied by color photographs. At the same time, the reader is presented with information about the medical use made of each substance. The information was received from the drug sellers, for some of whom it is a family profession, passed on by inheritance, and also from the audience of buyers. This information is presented alongside some of the written sources, cited in the literature of ancient medicine. The results of the research are summarized and presented in simple and clear language. This research has different aspects: historical, ethno-pharmacological and folkloristic, and it documents to a large extent the remains of the ancient medical culture, which is, in a sense, a disappearing world. The authors are lecturers and researchers in the History of Medicine section, in the Israel-Israel Studies Department at the Universities of Haifa and Bar-Ilan.
