Abstract

The revolution in women's status opened the gates for them to enter high-school and university education. This led all women, and especially Jewish women, to get intensely involved in education. In the late 19th century, as Zionist Jews and Lovers of Zion immigrated to the land of Israel, they joined the establishment of a new Hebrew education system. Women were instrumental to this move, most notably Henriette Szold and Shoshana Persitz – the former within the Zionist administration, the latter in Tel Aviv municipal administration. Early-childhood education, which was a great innovation, was led mainly by women kindergarten teachers. Many other female teachers taught in the Hebrew schools, all entrusted with teaching the Hebrew language. In the kindergartens they prepared the young children for school, and provided health and nutrition guidance for the children and their families. Among the women initiated and ran new educational institutions were Selma Ruppin who established the first music school, Debra Kallen, founder of the first progressive school, Mina Gorman and Irena Gaster, who set up the first special-education schools, and Rachel Schwartz who managed the newly invented playgrounds. Three revolutions took place in the Land of Israel – Zionist, feminist, and educational, each working with the others and increasing each other's strength.
