Abstract

Discusses the view that the birth of Israel was a direct result of the Holocaust. Palestinian Arabs and others have adopted this idea, claiming that the Zionists used the Holocaust to obtain a state; some Holocaust deniers even claim that the "elders of Zion" staged the Holocaust in order to achieve this goal. Admits that the tragedy of the Holocaust was used by the Zionists to justify the creation of the state and that it also influenced the views of foreign governments, but refutes the view of Yehuda Bauer and many others who see the state as a direct result of antisemitism during and after the Holocaust. States that the 1947 UN vote to establish the state was actually influenced by the de-colonization process, pro-Zionist feeling among Christians (especially in South America), and tactical errors of the British and the Arabs. also refutes the simplistic view of historian Evyatar Friesel, who believes that the Zionist dream almost failed because of the Holocaust, since so many of those who advocated a Jewish state were killed. States that the Holocaust to revival myth originated in the DP camps of Europe, where it encouraged the refugees and gave meaning to the Holocaust; however, it was then used by various groups for their own political purposes.
